A non-orthogonal optical overlapped time domain multiplexing system based on intensity modulation and direct detection is designed, and is demonstrated experimentally. The performance of non-orthogonal optical overlapped time division multiplexing system is compared with pulse amplitude modulation system that has the same bitrate with the proposed system. Experimental results show that when compared to the signals modulated by 4, 8 and 16 pulse amplitude modulation, the minimum receiver optical power of the signals modulated by the proposed system with rectangular pulse shaping of two, three and four fold overlapping are reduced by 2.5, 4.5 and 8.5dB, respectively, when satistying the hard detection-forward error correction threshold limit. %U https://journal.bupt.edu.cn/EN/10.13190/j.jbupt.2021-263
